Olympic Bid
Nov. 07, 2018
Hot topic. Will be interesting to learn more on this topic. Tickets are $40/person and can be purchased through Eventbrite via the link below
Mary Moran was appointed in late July 2018 to lead Calgary’s effort to finalize a bid for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Ms. Moran was an inspired choice for this position, given her passion for Calgary and her depth of knowledge about the city, her blend of business and marketing skills, her specialized economic development expertise and her own personal lifelong relationship with high-performance sport and its benefits. As President and CEO of Calgary Economic Development since 2015 and their VP of Marketing for several years before that, Mary knows what makes a great city. She has competed against cities around the world to attract top talent and leading companies to Calgary. During Mary’s tenure, Calgary has risen to a fourth place ranking in a recent CNN ranking of the world’s most livable cities.

United Way Community Hubs Project
Nov. 28, 2018
The Community Hubs initiative is a partnership between United Way of Calgary and Area, The City of Calgary, and Rotary Club of Calgary, in support of the Enough for All Strategy, specifically:
“This is the first partnership of its kind in Canada where a United Way, municipal government, and service club are taking on a neighbourhood initiative at this scale,” says Karen Young, President, United Way of Calgary and Area. “2016 was a foundational year with the investment in the first two hub sites at Village Square, and 1000 Voices at the Genesis Centre. We look forward to building on and learning from these models as we work with communities to activate the other sites.” Acting as a ‘community living room’ of sorts, Community Hubs are easily accessible gathering places for residents to connect, socialize, plan, and host community activities. They will house resources and services identified as needed by the community, and serve as a platform to ignite conversations on things with local impact. Education, employment, financial literacy, resident involvement and leadership; kids recreation programs, childcare, and youth initiatives; counselling, food hamper distribution, connecting isolated seniors, and assisting new immigrant families. These are just some of the things Community Hubs are looking at offering with the goal of helping individuals and communities thrive. The true power of Community Hubs lies in their uniqueness to reflect local needs and desires. Empowering residents to shape and build the kind of community they want to live in and raise their families in. |

Alzheimer Society of Calgary
Jan. 13, 2019
Music has the unique ability to transport us and capture moments in time. That song comes on and suddenly you can hear the swish of your dress on your wedding day, the scent of your new baby, or the view from the top of the Ferris wheel. Music is a powerful medium that has a tremendous impact on our lives and particularly for those living with dementia. The Alzheimer Society of Calgary is thrilled to introduce music to the Club 36 Adult Day program. This program will provide personalized music for members of Club. Research shows, music can help stimulate memories in people living with dementia. The program will enable the members to reconnect with the world through music-triggered memories. The staff at the Alzheimer Society of Calgary has completed training for the music program from the non-profit organization Music & Memory. Over the coming months, Club 36 will begin to implement the program. To see the music program in action, check out this preview from the documentary Alive Inside: https://youtu.be/IaB5Egej0TQ
