Our story began in 1945, when CARE first came together to support populations in Europe devastated by the Second World War.
On May 11, 1946, the first 20,000 CARE Packages reached the battered port of Le Havre, France. Some 100 million more CARE Packages would be delivered to people in need during the next two decades, first in Europe and later in Asia and other parts of the developing world.
Over the years, CARE's work has grown to address a changing world. In the 1950s, CARE expanded into emerging nations; in the 1960s, it pioneered primary health care programs. In the 1970s and 1980s, CARE responded to massive famines in Africa with emergency relief and long-term agro-forestry projects, integrating environmentally sound land-management practices with farming programs.
The following decades saw CARE face the fallout from unprecedented natural disasters and conflict causing widespread displacement, while delivering sustainable development programming.
